The circus has always run on two things at once: spectacle and rules, hijinks and control. The Interior Circus borrows that structure as a map of the psyche. Harlequin and Pierrot, traditionally figures of mischief and melancholy, each hold their own contradiction: joy shadowed by grief, control masking chaos, and the reverse.
